It happened Sunday around 9 a.m. as the teenager was in a designated swim area at Cunningham Falls State Park in Frederick County. Animal control picked up the beaver later that day from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

On Monday, the Maryland Department of Health notified the Frederick County Health Department that the beaver tested positive for rabies. Authorities said swimming is prohibited in the William Houck Area in Hunting Creek Lake until it can be confirmed safe, which could take several days.

“Mammals can be infected with the rabies virus, therefore do not touch or play with unknown animals. If you or your pets have contact with a wild animal contact the local authorities,” said Barry Glotfelty, director of the county’s Environmental Health Services.

Rabies is a viral disease that mainly infects mammals and is spread through the saliva of the infected animal, usually by a bite, the Frederick County Health Department .

“Symptoms of rabies in animals may include fear of water, excessive salivation, failure to eat or drink, limping, unusually friendly or aggressive behavior and/or other atypical behaviors such as nocturnal animals emerging during the daytime,” the health department said.

The disease is nearly always fatal to humans if infected and no prompt post-exposure treatment is had.

Kaylee Hottle, 18, who played Jia in the film series, was riding as a passenger in a sedan when its 19-year-old driver crashed before 3 a.m. in Ijamsville,.

The sheriff’s office said the 1995 Honda Accord traveled off the right side of a two-lane road in the 11400 block of Windsor Road and struck a culvert.

The man driving the Accord was taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening and another passenger declined medical treatment, the sheriff’s office said.

Hottle, of Kyle, Texas, was taken to a trauma center, where she was later pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office said excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Hottle’s character communicated using American Sign Language in 鈥淕odzilla vs. Kong鈥� and 鈥淕odzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” According to , she came from a family with multiple generations of deaf relatives.

Her father, Joshua Hottle, posted a 20-minute video to Facebook using ASL and wrote, “I am taking a flight that I never would like to take.”

Hottle was a senior at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin.

“Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time,” the .

The school is offering counseling to students and staff.

The Washington Commanders said they will retire Riggins’ No. 44 jersey during the game with the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 8.

Riggins, nicknamed “Riggo” and “Diesel,” helped “define one of the most successful eras in the team’s history,” the Commanders said in a news release.

“There are certain players whose impact goes far beyond statistics, championships and accolades; they become woven into the identity of a franchise. John Riggins is one of those players,” Commanders owner Josh Harris said in a .

“He played the game with a rare combination of physicality, fearlessness and personality that captivated fans and inspired his teammates.”

Commanders Team President Mark Clouse told WTOP that when he told Riggins the news, the former running back was skeptical at first, but turned into excitement about the reactions of fans.

“The fans were so important to him, and what a great representative for our franchise, and for the history of our team,” Clouse said, adding that this is the latest action to connect the past with the present. “We couldn’t be more excited to be celebrating John on that night. 鈥� I guarantee it’s going to be a night to remember for all of our fans.”

The running back played in Washington from 1976 to 1985 after spending his first five seasons in the league with the New York Jets. While in the nation’s capital, he led the league in rushing touchdowns twice 鈥� including a then-NFL record 24 touchdowns in 1983. Riggins also won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award and was a first-team All-Pro player.

One of his most memorable moments came in Super Bowl 17 against the Miami Dolphins. With Washington trailing 17-13 in the fourth quarter and having a fourth-and-one near midfield, Riggins took a handoff from quarterback Joe Theismann and took it 43 yards for the go-ahead touchdown that would eventually clinch the Burgundy and Gold’s first Super Bowl title.

He would be named Super Bowl MVP because of his performance, in which he had 38 carries for 166 yards.

In 1990, he was voted into Washington’s Ring of Honor along with Theismann. During the ceremony, he came out onto the field of RFK Stadium with his uniform, shoulder pads and game pads on to the delight of the crowd.

“I knew this was going to work. It was going to work and the fans just erupted,” Riggins said in a video of the . “In those moments, they have the memories. I have the memories of that great moment where the fans acknowledge you. 鈥� And I say this with all sincerity, the fans were my oxygen.”

Riggins was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. He is Washington’s all-time leading rusher 鈥� 7,472 of his 11,352 career yards came while wearing the Burgundy and Gold.

Following tests, the utility found that water was found safe to drink for nearly 5,000 customers in the neighborhoods of Chevy Chase D.C., Friendship Heights, Tenleytown, American University Park, Spring Valley, Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, Van Ness, Glover Park, Wesley Heights and Cathedral Heights.

“D.C. Water tested samples from multiple sites in the affected area, confirming that drinking water meets all EPA water quality standards and verified no coliform bacteria present following the loss of pressure in some portions of the distribution system,” the utility said in a Saturday evening.

D.C. Water announced the boil water advisory on Friday after reports of low pressure from customers and fluctuating power loss at the Fort Reno Pumping Station. The cause of the power loss is under investigation, the utility said.

It happened Sunday just before 5:30 a.m. Stafford County Fire and Rescue units arrived in the 200 block of Choptank Road to a fire coming from the side of a two-story house.

The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes, .

The people inside the home were able to get out before firefighters arrived, and no one was hurt.

However, “multiple pets did not make it out,” the fire department said.

There were working smoke alarms in the home, and the five people in the house will get help from the American Red Cross.

The Stafford County Fire Marshal鈥檚 Office is investigating what caused the fire.

Voters in the City of Alexandria are not just casting their ballots for Virginia’s redistricting referendum, they’re also electing a new member of their city council.

Three candidates are running for the seat vacated by R. Kirk McPike, who resigned in January to run for the House of Delegates for District 5 鈥� part of special elections in the Commonwealth triggered by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s appointments to her new administration.

Sandy Marks is the Democratic candidate for at-large member of the council. Marks served two terms as the Alexandria Democratic Committee chair. Virginia Public Access Project, a nonprofit that reports the “financial aspects of politics,” showed that Marks has raised a little more than $53,000.

As of 8:30 p.m. the City of Alexandria reported Marks receiving over 53% of the vote.

By 9 p.m., unofficial results showing all 32 precincts have been tallied and election night was complete with Marks taking the win.

Marks claimed victory at an election night watch party in Del Ray, according to

Frank Fannon ran as an independent and was the Republican member of the city council from 2009 to 2012. Fannon raised almost $85,000 for his campaign, VPAP reported.

Alison O’Connell was the other independent candidate. She served on the city鈥檚 Commission on Persons with Disabilities and the Alexandria Housing Affordability Advisory Committee. O’Connell raised about $4,500, according to VPAP.

The winner will serve on the council through Dec. 31, 2027.

The ground stop originally came into effect around 5:30 p.m. at Reagan National, Dulles International and BWI Marshall airports, as well as the Charlottesville-Albemarle and Richmond International airports. The airports continued to face ground delays after the order was lifted.

In a statement to WTOP, the FAA said the ground stops were due to a “strong chemical smell” at the Potomac Consolidated Terminal RADAR Approach Control in Virginia, affecting some air traffic controllers. No injuries were reported.

The site provides air traffic control services to the Baltimore-Washington and Richmond-Charlottesville areas.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in that the strong odor was caused by a circuit board that overheated. He said it’s been replaced and air traffic controllers have been cleared to return to the building.

Between 25% and one-third of all flights departing from the affected airports were delayed after the ground stop.

鈥淭here’s going to be ripple effects all night long because the delays were growing by the second, it looked like,鈥� said Tom Roussey, a transportation reporter with WTOP news partner 7太子探花.

The TRACON facility is an FAA site that works with the regional airports. Roussey said with the way flights are scheduled, “if anything throws them off, it creates a ripple effect, and I’m sure they’ll be dealing with this the rest of the night, maybe even into tomorrow.”

Fauquier County Fire Rescue System said in a release Friday night that crews were alerted to a “potential hazardous materials incident” after personnel reported a strong smell of chemicals inside the facility. Prince William County’s hazardous materials team also responded to the incident.

Chief Kalvyn Smith said in the release that some employees had “mild symptoms” when they were evaluated by EMS, with none requiring transport to a local hospital.

WTOP anchor Mark Lewis was caught at Reagan National, where his flight was meant to depart at 5 p.m. It wasn’t until 7 p.m. that he reported the plane’s engine turned on and the pilot began taxiing. He said the whole flight applauded when they heard the good news.

WTOP listeners have reported sitting on tarmacs for long periods of time or deboarding altogether.

One listener told WTOP they were in line to takeoff when their pilot came on the overhead radio to inform passengers of the ground stop. They sat on the tarmac for 45 minutes until the plane returned to its departure gate where passengers deplaned. A Southwest flight had originally been scheduled to takeoff at 4:35 p.m., only starting reboarding procedures around 7:30 p.m.

Police arrived to the 10000 block of Maple Leaf Drive in Montgomery Village around 2:45 p.m. for reports of an unresponsive person.

Officers and fire department personnel found the boy with an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face,” Montgomery County police said in an update.

They performed CPR on the boy, who was not responsive when they arrived. The child died on the scene.

Montgomery County police spokesperson Shiera Goff said during a news conference that there is no foul play suspected and that it is being investigated as an accidental shooting. She added that there was one adult inside the house when the shooting happened.听

“There’s really nothing that I can say that would, right now, bring comfort to anyone,” Goff said. “This is a child. This was an isolated incident. No one was targeted. This child unfortunately gained access to this firearm.”

On Wednesday, a Montgomery County police spokeswoman said the child gained access to the gun in the house, but did not specify details on how. She said the firearm was registered.

The Montgomery County State’s Attorney will decide whether there will be charges, the spokeswoman said.

Neighbor Ameer remembered the boy a charming and energetic child.

“He was quite an energetic kid, he was always giggling and smiling,” he said.

Another neighbor, Keith Bower, said the loss is devastating for the tight-knit neighborhood.

“Any loss of a child is devastating, but certainly it just hits home with a neighborhood that are pretty close together,” he said.

D.C. police issued an Amber Alert for the 3-year-old boy following a shooting that killed his mother and injured a 12-year-old girl.

The boy was found in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffery Carroll confirmed Wednesday evening.

The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4100 block of W Street NW.

There, police found a woman shot several times and pronounced her dead on the scene. A 12-year-old girl was also found suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm and transported to a hospital.

An 8-year-old boy was also found, uninjured, in the home. Police said he’s been reunited with his father and is safe.

During their investigation, Carroll said the “domestic” dispute inside the apartment “spilled out from the apartment into the hallway.”

Police said the suspect in the shooting was identified as Stephon Jeter, 35.

Jeter apparently fled the scene in a pickup truck that police posted on social media alongside his mugshot.

Carroll said at a news conference after the shooting that Prince George’s County Police saw Jeter’s pickup truck and chased it into D.C. The vehicle crashed around 30th and Nash Place, Carroll said.

Police found Jeter inside the vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and no sign of the 3-year-old.

Carroll said that Jeter was the father of the 3-year-old boy. The two other children inside the Glover Park home were children of the woman who was killed.

“This is one of the most tragic circumstances I’ve ever seen. An entire family is destroyed through the acts of an individual,” Carroll said. “Our hearts go out the entire family that’s involved in this.”

The 3-year-old was found safe with a relative in Prince George’s County, Carroll said.

Eashan John Stefanski, 34, of Pasadena, Maryland, was charged with leaving a loaded firearm accessible to a minor, .

The charge follows an incident聽Wednesday morning at Freetown Elementary School in Glen Burnie, during which the boy accidentally discharged a firearm, injuring his hand. The child was taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma for treatment of injuries that authorities said were not life-threatening.

Detectives found that the gun was obtained from the child’s residence.听Stefanski is the boyfriend of the child’s mother, .

A teacher took possession of the firearm and rendered aid to the student, a police spokesperson said. None of the other children in the classroom were injured.

Freetown students were dismissed early Wednesday and returned to school Thursday morning.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Bedell said crisis counselors would be available Wednesday and Thursday to handle any trauma in the school community.

鈥淲hen we hear calls like this, especially involving children or elderly, it鈥檚 very unsettling for all of us, because there鈥檚 so many unknowns,鈥� Anne Arundel County police Chief Amal Awad said during a news conference after the shooting.

James Trotta was out with his wife, son and sled in tow. This is the first time there was enough snow on the ground that son Ethan was able to make a fort.

Another family nearby had the same idea, building a fort that’s also a tunnel. Inside was 12-year-old Eli Riedel, who built the fort with help from another kid out enjoying the day.

There’s no school on Monday for these Montgomery County kids, and Quinn Chan Lugay and her family are making snow memories as she careens down the steep hill outside the Geico building on her bright orange sled.

“This is the largest amount of snow that I’ve ever experienced,” Chan Lugay said.

Christopher Young, 34, was crossing Little River Turnpike at Shelley Lane in Annandale when the driver of a sedan traveling westbound struck him.

Police responded around 7 a.m. and took Young to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died.
