WASHINGTON — A group of outages in the Bethesda, Maryland, area affected thousands of Pepco customers and briefly modified Metro service Monday night.

Power was fully restored by 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The outages involved different neighborhoods, including the West Chevy Chase Heights area up to Alta Vista and Pooks Hill.

Metro said that due to the outage, escalators, elevators and other station equipment were affected, but trains were still operating normally. After 8 p.m., trains were bypassing the Bethesda station and riders had to request a bus to and from the Medical Center station for a time, but regular service has since been restored.

A Pepco spokesperson said there’s an equipment issue at the Bethesda substation. Pepco said most folks should have their power restored sometime Monday night.

Double amputee Army vet drowns while paddleboarding in Chesapeake Bay /anne-arundel-county/2018/06/double-amputee-army-vet-drowns-while-paddleboarding-in-chesapeake-bay/ /anne-arundel-county/2018/06/double-amputee-army-vet-drowns-while-paddleboarding-in-chesapeake-bay/#respond Thu, 28 Jun 2018 15:28:06 +0000 /?p=18471192 WASHINGTON 鈥 A double amputee and Army veteran drowned while paddleboarding in the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis on Wednesday.

Maryland Natural Resources Police that Cody Iorns, 25, of D.C., died Wednesday evening off Tolly Point.

He and three others had gone out on the water around 6 p.m.

During the excursion, his companions noticed he’d fallen and was face down in the water.

They inflated his lifejacket and pulled him onto his board, then performed CPR while pulling him to shore.

He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Paddleboaring group Capital SUP announced Iorns’ passing with “incredible shock and deep sadness.”

“We are still processing how it happened. Please pray for Cody鈥檚 family. We are at a loss for words. He was our brother. He was an inspiration to everyone on and off the water,” they wrote.

A profile by National Geographic last year said Iorns was a competitive paddleboarder and former Army medic who had lost both of his arms in a motorcycle accident.

He used prosthetic limbs to paddleboard.

Natural Resources Police spokesperson Candy Thomson said the paddleboarders faced “challenging” conditions with the wind on the water.

She said Iorns was well known in the local paddle boarding community in Annapolis.

An autopsy is being conducted.

The fire broke out around 4:45 a.m. in a two-story home on Oriole Place in the Quail Valley neighborhood. The heavy fire engulfed the first floor and the stairway; the blaze spread through the roof and caused the home to partially collapse.

The only two occupants of the home jumped from the second floor to escape, said Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

The occupants and a firefighter, who had a medical condition, were all taken to the hospital for evaluation. They are all expected to be OK.

Piringer said the two occupants of the home are alive because their bedroom door was closed.

Three town houses have been posted unsafe to occupy, displacing a total of three families.

While officials are still assessing the damage, Piringer said the dollar loss will be significant.

Almost 100 firefighters responded to the fire, and it took about 30 to 40 minutes to bring the fire under control, Piringer said.

Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.

Police are looking for Dekale Bowman, 18, in connection to the January homicide of a 16-year-old in Northeast D.C. (Courtesy D.C. police)

Police say Dekale Bowman, of Northeast, is currently wanted on an outstanding D.C. Superior Court bench warrant in a homicide that happened on Jan. 25 in the 100 block of Mount Olivet Road.

Court records indicate that Bowman, who was being held on theft and other charges in Maryland, was released on Thursday on “personal recognizance” rather than returned to D.C. police custody.

Bowman did not come for a court appearance in D.C. that was scheduled Friday, May 4.

A Department of Youth Rehabilitative Services representative reported that Bowman did not return voluntarily and was not supervised by any authorities.

Police say Bowman was in a relationship with Taiyania Thompson when she was shot in the face. She was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died three days later.

He was ordered held without bond following a preliminary hearing in March, during which Thompson’s relatives and friends got into a shouting match with Bowman.

D.C. police arrested Bowman on Jan. 30, two days after Thompson was pronounced dead. Police say the shooting was related to a domestic dispute.

Bowman told a witness the shooting was an accident. He is charged with second-degree murder while armed in the shooting.
