Oleksandr Usyk beats Tyson Fury by split decision to become the undisputed heavyweight champion /sports/2024/05/oleksandr-usyk-beats-tyson-fury-by-split-decision-to-become-the-undisputed-heavyweight-champion/ Sun, 19 May 2024 00:10:31 +0000 /?p=26043385&preview=true&preview_id=26043385 RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) 鈥 Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury by split decision on Sunday to become the first undisputed heavyweight boxing champion in 24 years.

Usyk (22-0) added Fury鈥檚 WBC title to his own WBA, IBF and IBO belts with a spectacular late rally highlighted by a ninth-round knockdown in a back-and-forth bout between two previously unbeaten heavyweight champs. Two judges favored Usyk, 115-112 and 114-113, while the third gave it to Fury, 114-113.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great time. It鈥檚 a great day,鈥 Usyk said.

Usyk started quickly, but then had to survive while the confident, charismatic Fury dominated the middle rounds. Usyk rallied in the final rounds, just as the Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist has done so many times in his career, taking control with a dominant eighth and nearly stopping Fury in the ninth.

Usyk hurt Fury (34-1-1) with a left hand and eventually sent him sprawling into a corner in the final seconds of the round, getting credit for a knockdown right before Fury was saved by the bell. Fury made it to the 10th, but he struggled to mount a consistent attack after nearly getting stopped.

鈥淭hank you so much to my team,” Usyk said while fighting back tears in the ring. 鈥滻t鈥檚 a big opportunity for me, for my family, for my country. Slava Ukraini!”

Fury kissed Usyk on the head after the final bell. Fury also said he wants the rematch in October.

鈥淚 believe I won that fight,鈥 Fury said. 鈥淚 believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of them, and I believe it was one of those what-can-you-do, one of them … decisions in boxing. We both put on a good fight, best we can do.

“You know, his country is at war, so people are siding with a country at war. But make no mistake, I won that fight, in my opinion, and I鈥檒l be back. I鈥檝e got a rematch clause.鈥

The 37-year-old Usyk is the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis held the honor for five months in 1999 and 2000. He is also now the lineal heavyweight champion by beating Fury, who beat Wladimir Klitschko to earn that distinction in 2015.

Usyk is 6 inches shorter than the 6-foot-9 Fury, and he weighed in 30 pounds lighter than the hulking British star this week. The size difference didn’t matter to Usyk, who has used his athleticism and skill to counter every challenge he has faced since moving up from cruiserweight to heavyweight in 2019.

Usyk landed 41% of his 407 punches, while Fury landed just 31.7% of his 496 punches, according to CompuBox statistics. Usyk both threw (260 to 210) and landed (122 to 95) more power punches.

Usyk upset Anthony Joshua to win three title belts in 2021, and he kept them through two defenses while angling for the ultimate payday of a fight against Fury in Saudi Arabia.

Usyk has now joined the elite club of fighters who held every major world championship belt at heavyweight 鈥 and he is the first to do it in the four-belt era, which began in 2007. The list of undisputed champions includes Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson.

The most recent undisputed heavyweight champ was Lewis, who beat Evander Holyfield in late 1999 and enjoyed a five-month reign. He soon lost a title because of the territorial squabbles that have beset boxing for the past quarter-century and routinely prevented the biggest fights from happening.

Fury and Usyk both asked for this matchup, and they finally got together in the ring largely because of the involvement of Saudi Arabia, which made the financial rewards simply too great for the fighters鈥 typically recalcitrant promoters and the sanctioning bodies to reject. Fury will reportedly make more than $100 million for the bout.

To reach the lucrative Western pay-per-view audience, the bout didn鈥檛 begin until 1:45 a.m. on Sunday morning at Kingdom Arena.

Seize the Grey wins the Preakness for D. Wayne Lukas and ends Mystik Dan鈥檚 Triple Crown bid /local-sports/2024/05/kentucky-derby-winner-mystik-dan-takes-on-7-other-horses-in-the-149th-preakness/ Sun, 19 May 2024 00:08:24 +0000 /?p=26042250&preview=true&preview_id=26042250

BALTIMORE (AP) 鈥 D. Wayne Lukas worked his way to Seize the Grey after his horse won and kept getting interrupted by well-wishes offering congratulations.

鈥淚 think they鈥檙e trying to get rid of me,鈥 Lukas said. 鈥淭hey probably want me to retire. I don鈥檛 think that鈥檒l happen.鈥

Not when the 88-year-old Hall of Fame trainer keeps winning.

Seize the Grey ended Mystik Dan’s Triple Crown bid by going wire to wire to win the Preakness on Saturday, giving Lukas his seventh victory in the race, one short of the record held by .

鈥淚鈥檓 only one behind him 鈥 I warned him already,鈥 Lukas said. 鈥淚t never gets old at this level, and I love the competition. I love to get in here with the rest of them.鈥

The strapping grey colt took advantage of the muddy track just as Lukas hoped he would, pulling off the upset in a second consecutive impressive start two weeks after romping in a race on the Derby undercard at Churchill Downs. Going off at 9-1 as one of the longest shots on the board, Seize the Grey moved to the lead immediately out of the starting gate and never looked back, finishing in 1:56.82.

鈥淚 thought his action down the backside was beautiful, and I knew that he was handling the track,鈥 Lukas said. 鈥淚 said, 鈥榃atch out, he鈥檚 not going to quit.'”

Mystik Dan finished second in the field of eight horses running in the $2 million, 1 3/16-mile race. After falling short of going back to back following his win by a nose in the Kentucky Derby, it would be a surprise if he runs in the on June 8 at Saratoga Race Course.

鈥淢y colt鈥檚 a fantastic colt and proud of him,鈥 trainer Kenny McPeek said. 鈥淚t just wasn鈥檛 his day, but he鈥檒l live to race again.鈥

Seize the Grey was a surprise Preakness winner facing tougher competition than in the Pat Day Mile on May 4. Though given the Lukas connection, it should never be a surprise when one of his horses is covered in a blanket of Black-Eyed Susan flowers.

No one in the race鈥檚 149-year history has saddled more horses in the Preakness than Lukas with 48 since debuting in 1980 and winning that one with Codex. He had two in this time, with Just Steel finishing fifth, but Seize the Grey 鈥 owned by 2,570 people involved in the MyRacehorse group 鈥 delivered the victory.

鈥淚 just couldn鈥檛 be happier for every single one of them,鈥 MyRacehorse founder and CEO Michael Behrens said. 鈥淲e had some big expectations, but this exceeds all those expectations.”

Seize the Grey paid $21.60 to win, $8.40 to place and $4.40 to show. Mystik Dan paid $4.20 and $2.80, while third-place Catching Freedom paid $3.20 to show.

Baffert, who was looking for a record-extending ninth Preakness victory, was supposed to have two horses in the field, but morning line favorite earlier in the week because of a fever. Baffert’s Imagination finished seventh.

鈥淗e is still learning,鈥 Baffert said. 鈥淚 think we are learning his style. I saw a lot today that I can change going forward. I don鈥檛 think he wants to run like that. We didn鈥檛 really have a plan. We thought it would be Wayne or us.鈥

Muth鈥檚 absence made Mystik Dan the 2-1 favorite, but he and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. could not replicate their perfect Derby trip to win that race鈥檚 first three-way photo finish since 1947. Instead, Jaime Torres rode Seize the Grey to a win in his first Triple Crown race of any kind.

“I have no words,” said Torres, a native of Puerto Rico who did not begin racing until seeing it on TV in late 2019. 鈥淚鈥檓 very excited, very excited and very thankful to all the people that have been behind me, helping me.鈥

This was the last Preakness held at Pimlico Race Course as it stands before demolition begins on the historic but deteriorating track, which will still hold the 150th running of it next year mid-construction.

That process is already well underway at Belmont Park, which is why the final leg of the Triple Crown is happening at Saratoga for the first time and is being shortened to 1 1/4 miles because of the shape of the course. Kentucky Derby second-place finisher Sierra Leone, a half step from winning, is expected to headline that field, though Lukas said he’d wait to see about Seize the Grey also running.

Giuliani becomes final defendant served indictment among 18 accused in Arizona fake electors case /national/2024/05/giuliani-becomes-final-defendant-served-indictment-among-17-accused-in-arizona-fake-electors-case/ Sat, 18 May 2024 23:56:44 +0000 /?p=26043124&preview=true&preview_id=26043124 Arizona’s attorney general says former New York Mayor has been served an indictment in the state’s fake elector case alongside for his role in an attempt to overturn former President Donald Trump鈥檚 loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes posted the news regarding the Trump-aligned lawyer on her X account late Friday.

鈥淭he final defendant was served moments ago. nobody is above the law,鈥 Mayes wrote.

The attorney general鈥檚 spokesman Richie Taylor said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday that Giuliani faces the same charges as the other defendants, including conspiracy, fraud and forgery charges.

Giuliani鈥檚 political adviser, Ted Goodman, confirmed Giuliani was served Friday night after his 80th birthday celebration as he was walking to the car.

鈥淲e look forward to full vindication soon,鈥 Goodman said in a statement Saturday.

The indictment alleges that Giuliani 鈥減ressured鈥 Arizona legislators and the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to change the outcome of Arizona鈥檚 election and that he was responsible for encouraging Republican electors in Arizona and six other contested states to vote for Trump.

Taylor said an unredacted copy of the indictment will be released Monday. He said Giuliani is expected to appear in court Tuesday unless he is granted a delay by the court.

, Trump鈥檚 former chief of staff, is among others who have been indicted in the case.

Neither Meadows nor Giuliani were named in the redacted grand jury indictment released earlier because they had not been served with it, but they were readily identifiable based on descriptions in the document. The Arizona attorney general鈥檚 office said Wednesday that and confirmed that he was charged with the same counts as the other named defendants, including conspiracy, fraud and forgery charges.

With the indictments, Arizona becomes the fourth state where allies of the former president have been charged with using false or unproven claims about voter fraud related to the election.

Giuliani faces other legal proceedings, and a bankruptcy judge this past week said he was and for missed deadlines to file financial disclosure reports. Giuliani after being ordered to pay $148 million to two former election workers for spreading a false conspiracy theory about their role in the 2020 election.

Giuliani was also indicted last year by a , where he is accused of spearheading Trump鈥檚 efforts to compel state lawmakers in Georgia to ignore the will of voters and illegally appoint pro-Trump electoral college electors.

Among the defendants are 11 Arizona Republicans who submitted a document to Congress falsely declaring that Trump won in Arizona in the 2020 presidential election 鈥 including a former state GOP chair, a 2022 U.S. Senate candidate and two sitting state lawmakers. The other defendants are Mike Roman, who was Trump鈥檚 director of Election Day operations, and four attorneys accused of organizing an attempt to use fake documents to persuade Congress not to certify Biden鈥檚 victory: John Eastman, Christina Bobb, Boris Epshteyn and Jenna Ellis.

Trump himself was not charged but was referred to as an unindicted co-conspirator.

The 11 people who had been nominated to be Arizona鈥檚 Republican electors met in Phoenix on Dec. 14, 2020, to sign a certificate saying they were 鈥渄uly elected and qualified鈥 electors and claiming that Trump carried the state. of the signing ceremony was posted on social media by the Arizona Republican Party at the time. The document was later sent to Congress and the National Archives, where it was ignored.

Biden won Arizona by more than 10,000 votes.

Eastman, who devised a strategy to try to persuade Congress not to certify the election, became the first person charged in Arizona鈥檚 fake elector case to be arraigned on Friday. He pleaded not guilty to .

Eastman made a brief statement outside the courthouse, saying the charges against him should have never been filed.

鈥淚 had zero communications with the electors in Arizona (and) zero involvement in any of the election litigation in Arizona or legislative hearings. And I am confident that with the laws faithfully applied, I will be fully be exonerated at the end of this process,鈥 Eastman said. He declined to make further comment.

Arraignments are scheduled May 21 for 12 other people charged in the case, including nine of the 11 Republicans who had submitted a document to Congress falsely declaring Trump had won Arizona.

The Arizona indictment said Eastman encouraged the GOP electors to cast their votes in December 2020, unsuccessfully pressured state lawmakers to change the election鈥檚 outcome in Arizona and told then-Vice President Mike Pence that he could reject Democratic electors in the counting of electoral votes in Congress on Jan. 6, 2021.

Bell hits tying homer as Marlins score 4 in 9th off struggling D铆az and rally past Mets 10-9 in 10 /sports/2024/05/bell-hits-tying-homer-as-marlins-score-4-in-9th-off-struggling-diaz-and-rally-past-mets-10-9-in-10/ Sat, 18 May 2024 23:53:36 +0000 /?p=26043403&preview=true&preview_id=26043403 MIAMI (AP) 鈥 Josh Bell hit a tying homer off Edwin D铆az in a four-run ninth inning, the latest costly meltdown by the struggling New York Mets closer, and Otto Lopez singled home the winning run in the 10th as the Miami Marlins rallied for a 10-9 victory Saturday.

Lopez grounded a single up the middle off Jorge L贸pez (1-1) through a drawn-in infield to score automatic runner Christian Bethancourt from third, and the last-place Marlins stretched their winning streak to a season-best four games.

Miami was down 9-5 in the ninth before Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled off D铆az to drive in Vidal Brujan, who led off with a double. Bryan De La Cruz reached on an infield single with one out, and Bell hammered D铆az’s first-pitch slider 428 feet to straightaway center field for a three-run shot that tied it.

Tanner Scott (3-4) picked up the win by pitching a scoreless 10th.

Miami had shut out its previous three opponents 鈥 including an 8-0 win over the Mets on Friday night 鈥 before J.D. Martinez ripped a line drive to center off starter Braxton Garrett that scored Francisco Lindor in the first. The Marlins鈥 streak ended three innings short of the franchise record set in April 2004.

Garrett pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and six runs with five strikeouts and a walk.

Chisholm was 3 for 5 with a solo homer off Mets starter Luis Severino in the second. Severino gave up six hits and five runs in 6 2/3 innings.

The right-hander let the Marlins back in it in the seventh when he allowed a walk, a run-scoring double and a two-out RBI single that made it 7-4. Reed Garrett replaced Severino and gave up an RBI single to Bell before retiring Jesus Sanchez on a flyout to end the inning.

Schauffele and Morikawa are tied at the PGA Champion with a lot of company, except for Scheffler /sports/2024/05/pga-championship-is-delayed-by-fog-at-valhalla/ Sat, 18 May 2024 23:52:24 +0000 /?p=26042435&preview=true&preview_id=26042435 LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) 鈥 Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa shared the lead at the PGA Championship on a chaotic Saturday, this time for reasons inside the ropes, with more scoring records and constant jockeying for a shot at winning a major.

Just about everyone was involved but Scottie Scheffler.

Schauffele overcame a double bogey late by closing with two birdies for a 3-under 68. Morikawa holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th at Valhalla for a 67. Shane Lowry missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole and had to settle for his place in major championship history with a 62 鈥 the second one this week at vulnerable Valhalla.

When the cheers finally ended, Schauffele and Morikawa were at 15-under 198, one shot ahead of Sahith Theegala, who had a 68. The stage was set for endless possibilities in the final round, with 15 players separated by five shots.

The shocker was Scheffler not being among them.

Scheffler was coming off the most heart-racing day of his career that featured , brief jail time and a 66 to get into contention for a second straight major. But he fell apart early and never quite recovered, ending his streak of 42 consecutive rounds at par or better with a 73.

He was nine shots behind, with 23 players ahead of him.

鈥淭oo many mistakes,鈥 Scheffler told CBS. He declined to speak to reporters. 鈥淚 came out here hoping to have a good round and didn’t get it done.鈥

Even at the home of the Kentucky Derby, this final round could be tough to handicap.

Lowry’s magnificent performance 鈥 he made 161 feet worth of putts 鈥 ended with a wedge to just inside 12 feet and a clear shot at 61, only to not give the putt enough pace.

鈥淧robably the most disappointed anyone can ever be shooting 62,鈥 Lowry said. 鈥淟ook, I went out there with a job to do today, and my job was to try to get myself back in the tournament. And I definitely did that.鈥

He had plenty of company.

Bryson DeChambeau set off the throng of spectators by chipping in for eagle on the par-5 18th for a 67, pounding his fist in celebration. He joined Lowry at 13-under 200, just two shots behind. Viktor Hovland, the FedEx Cup champion last year who decided to retool his swing and disappeared from leaderboards this year, birdied three of his last four holes for a 66 and also was only two behind.

Justin Rose (64) was three shots back. The group five behind at 10-under 203 included Justin Thomas, the Louisville native who felt chills on a steamy day when he hacked out of the weeds, down to the green and into the cup on the par-3 14th for a most unlikely birdie. He shot 67.

That’s 15 players at 10 under or better, the most through 54 holes in major championship history. The previous record was seven players, most recently at St. Andrews in 2022.

The scoring average for the third round was 69.55, a fraction behind the record for the PGA Championship set at Bellerive in 2018.

This was the day to go low just to stay in the hunt. Scheffler, using fill-in caddie with regular looper Ted Scott attending his daughter’s high school graduation in Louisiana, was in trouble from the start 鈥 a double bogey on No. 2 from mangled rough, a tee shot into a hazard left of the reachable par-4 fourth hole.

He was 4 over through four holes, and on three occasions he followed a birdie with a bogey. It was his highest score since a 73 in the third round of the Tour Championship last August.

Now the focus turns to Schauffele, the Olympic gold medalist from the Tokyo Games in 2021 who is trying to bag a silver prize 鈥 the heavy Wanamaker Trophy 鈥 for his first major. Schauffele has been leading or tied in six of his last seven rounds.

The exception was losing a 54-hole lead last week to Rory McIlroy’s closing 65 at Quail Hollow.

鈥淚 just need to stay in my lane, and hopefully it’s enough,鈥 Schauffele said.

Morikawa already had two majors at age 24 and is slowly working his way back to that smooth, repeatable swing. He had one early wobble missing a 4-foot par putt on the second hole, and that was really his only big mistake.

There was no shortage of candidates to claim the second major of the year. The leading six players included three major champions, an Olympic gold medalist and the FedEx Cup champion. And there was Theegala, five shots behind at one point, chipping in from behind the 15th green for one of six birdies on his last 10 holes.

It was crowded at the top, just like it was at Harding Park in 2020, when a dozen players were separated by three shots going into the final round. Morikawa emerged with his first major.

鈥淟ook, I鈥檝e played against all these guys. It鈥檚 not like any of these guys are new,鈥 Morikawa said. 鈥淭hey all have their accolades within themselves, and really anyone can go low.鈥

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters rally in the rain in DC to mark a painful present and past /government/2024/05/thousands-are-expected-to-rally-on-washingtons-national-mall-in-support-of-palestinian-rights/ Sat, 18 May 2024 23:50:40 +0000 /?p=26042673&preview=true&preview_id=26042673 WASHINGTON (AP) 鈥 Hundreds of protesters rallied within sight of the U.S. Capitol, chanting pro-Palestinian slogans and voicing criticism of the Israeli and American governments as they marked a painful present 鈥 the war in Gaza 鈥 and past 鈥 the exodus of some 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were forced from what is now Israel when the state was created in 1948.

About 400 demonstrators braved steady rains to rally on the National Mall on the 76th anniversary of what is called , the Arabic word for catastrophe. In January, thousands of pro-Palestinian activists had in one of the larger protests in recent memory.

There were calls in support of Palestinian rights and an immediate end to . 鈥淣o peace on stolen land鈥 and 鈥淓nd the killings, stop the crime/Israel out of Palestine,鈥 echoed through the crowd.

Protesters also focused their anger on President Joe Biden, whom they accuse of feigning concern over the death toll in Gaza.

鈥淏iden Biden, you will see/genocide鈥檚 your legacy,鈥 they said. The Democratic president was in Atlanta on Saturday.

Reem Lababdi, a George Washington University sophomore who said she was pepper-sprayed by police last week when they broke up an , acknowledged that the rain seemed to hold down the numbers.

“I鈥檓 proud of every single person who turned out in this weather to speak their minds and send their message,鈥 she said.

This year鈥檚 commemoration was fueled by anger over the ongoing siege of Gaza. The latest began when Hamas and other militants stormed into southern Israel on about 1,200 people and taking an additional 250 hostage. Palestinian militants still hold about 100 captives, and Israel鈥檚 military has killed more than , according to Gaza鈥檚 Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Speaker Osama Abuirshad, executive director of American Muslims for Palestine, gestured at the Capitol building dome behind him.

鈥淭his Congress does not speak for us. This Congress does not represent the will of the people,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e’re paying for the bombs. We’re paying for the F-16s and F-35s. And then we do the poor Palestinians a favor and send some food.鈥

Speakers also expressed anger over the violent crackdown on multiple pro-Palestinian protest camps at universities across the country. In recent weeks, long-term encampments have been broken up by police at more than 60 schools; just under 3,000 protesters have been arrested.

鈥淭he students are the conscience of America,鈥 said Abuirshad, who compared the university demonstrations to earlier protest movements against the Vietnam War and apartheid-era South Africa. 鈥淭hat’s why the authorities are working so hard to silence them.鈥

In addition to pressing Israel and the Biden administration for an immediate end to hostilities in Gaza, activists have long pushed for the right of return for Palestinian refugees 鈥 an Israeli red line in decades of start-and-stop negotiations.

After the Arab-Israeli war that followed Israel’s establishment, Israel refused to allow them to return because it would have resulted in a Palestinian majority within Israel’s borders. Instead, they became a seemingly permanent refugee community that now numbers some 6 million, with most living in slum-like urban refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. In Gaza, the refugees and their descendants make up around three-quarters of the population.

At several points during the rally and subsequent march, protesters performed a call-and-response, with the speaker naming different cities in Israel and the occupied territories. The response: 鈥渞aageh!鈥 鈥 Arabic for 鈥淚’m returning!鈥

The demonstrators marched for several blocks on Pennsylvania and Constitution avenues, with police cars closing the streets ahead of them. One lone counter-protester, waving an Israeli flag, attempted to march near the front of the procession. At one point, one of the demonstrators snatched his flag and ran away.

With tensions rising, members of the protesters’ 鈥渟afety team鈥 formed a tight phalanx around the man, both to impede his progress and protect him from hot-heads in the crowd. The standoff was broken when a police officer intervened, led the man away and told him to go home.

Trump receives NRA endorsement as he vows to protect gun rights /elections/2024/05/donald-trump-will-address-the-nra-in-texas-hes-called-himself-the-best-president-for-gun-owners/ Sat, 18 May 2024 23:38:08 +0000 /?p=26041966&preview=true&preview_id=26041966 DALLAS (AP) 鈥 Former President urged gun owners to vote in the 2024 election as he addressed thousands of members of the National Rifle Association, which officially endorsed him just before Trump took the stage at their annual meeting in Texas on Saturday.

鈥淲e鈥檝e got to get gun owners to vote,” Trump said. 鈥淚 think you鈥檙e a rebellious bunch. But let鈥檚 be rebellious and vote this time.”

Trump, in his speech, said the Second Amendment 鈥渋s very much on the ballot” in November, alleging that, if Democratic President Joe Biden 鈥済ets four more years they are coming for your guns, 100% certain. Crooked Joe has a 40-year-record of trying to rip firearms out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.鈥

The Biden administration has taken a number of steps to try to combat , including that aims to close a loophole that has allowed tens of thousands of guns to be sold every year by unlicensed dealers who do not perform background checks.

Trump has pledged to continue to defend the Second Amendment, which he claims is 鈥渦nder siege,” and has 鈥渢he best friend gun owners have ever had in the White House鈥 as the United States faces record numbers of deaths due to mass shootings. Last year ended with 42 mass killings and 217 deaths, making it one of the .

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee has been criticized by Biden, specifically for remarks that Trump made this year after a . Trump called the incident 鈥渧ery terrible鈥 only to later say that 鈥渨e have to get over it. We have to move forward.鈥

Trump, during his speech, also laced into independent presidential candidate , calling him 鈥渞adical left” and 鈥渁 disaster,鈥 and noting that Kennedy had once .”

鈥淒on鈥檛 think about it. Don鈥檛 waste your vote,鈥 he said. 鈥淗e calls you a terrorist group, and I call you the backbone of America.鈥 (Kennedy later said in a Fox 太子探花 interview that he didn鈥檛 remember his 2018 tweet. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 consider them a terror group, and I support the Second Amendment,” he said.)

Trump noted he will be speaking next week at the Libertarian Party’s convention and said he will urge its members to vote for him.

鈥淲e have to join with them,” he said. 鈥淲e have to get that 3% because we can鈥檛 take a chance on Joe Biden winning.”

Earlier Saturday, Trump鈥檚 campaign and the Republican National Committee announced the creation of a new 鈥淕un Owners for Trump” coalition that includes gun rights activists and those who work in the firearms industry.

has made curtailing gun violence a major part of his administration and reelection campaign, creating overseen by Biden also has urged Congress to ban so-called assault weapons 鈥 something Democrats shied from even just a few years ago.

鈥淭onight, Donald Trump confirmed that he will do exactly what the NRA tells him to do 鈥 even if it means more death, more shootings, and more suffering,” said Biden spokesman Ammar Moussa.

When Trump was president, there were moments when he pledged to strengthen gun laws. After a high school mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people and wounded 17 others, Trump told survivors and family members that he would be He to the NRA but later he backpedaled, saying there was 鈥渘ot much political support.鈥

On Saturday, Trump also brought up the criminal cases against him as his heads into the final stretch next week and accused Democrats of being behind these cases because he is Biden’s opponent.

鈥淣ever forget our enemies want to take away my freedom because I will never let them take away your freedom,鈥 he said.

Trump criticized Biden’s border policies, repeating his pledge that he will order the largest domestic deportation operation. He spoke about abortion and warned Republicans not to be so extreme on abortion to remain electable.

鈥淚n my opinion, Republicans have not been talking about it intelligently. They haven鈥檛 been talking about it with knowledge,” he said. 鈥淩emember, speak from your heart. But you also have to get elected again.鈥

Rough return to ‘normal’ sends Scheffler down the leaderboard at PGA Championship /sports/2024/05/rough-start-for-scheffler-sends-him-down-the-leaderboard-after-9-holes-at-pga-championship/ Sat, 18 May 2024 23:36:33 +0000 /?p=26043090&preview=true&preview_id=26043090 LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) 鈥 Scottie Scheffler arrived at the golf course Saturday in plenty of time. Once he got there, nothing felt quite right.

A day after he powered through his , then back to the course just in time to get to the opening tee box, Scheffler enjoyed a more regular schedule but struggled to keep things together at the PGA Championship.

He shot 2-over 73 in the third round to close at 7 under for the tournament and drop from fourth to a tie for 24th. It snapped a string of 42 straight rounds of par or better for the world’s top player, dating to Saturday at the Tour Championship last year.

鈥淚 definitely did not feel like myself today,鈥 he said. 鈥淵esterday happened, I did my best to recover from it and come out and compete. This morning was not my usual routine for a round. At the end of the day, I came out hoping to have a good round but I wasn鈥檛 able to get it done, which was frustrating.鈥

Though he said his arrest and trip to a holding cell the day before left his heart thumping and his head spinning, it didn’t show on the course or the scoreboard; he shot 66 in Round 2. A day later, it was clear he was still adjusting to the stunning events of the previous 36 hours.

He started losing ground even before he stepped onto the course.

Justin Rose and Shane Lowry led the way, shooting 64 and 62 in a group more than an hour ahead of Scheffler’s.

The scoring average at Valhalla was 69.55, the second-lowest for the third round of a PGA in history. In all, 15 players will begin the final round at double-digits under par; the previous record for a major was seven, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

But the reigning Masters champion got left out of the party.

He made two bogeys and a double over his first four holes, finished the front nine in 38 and shot his worst round of the season. Even though he struggled, he still felt the love. Chants of 鈥淪cottie, Scottie, Scottie,鈥 were scattered across the course, never louder than when he made a short birdie putt on 18 to close the day.

Before that, it was an ugly mix of missed tee shots, bad lies in the rough and a few struggles with the putter that had more or less gone away during a season in which he has won four times.

鈥淚 was battling as hard as I could all day but every time I’d make a birdie, I鈥檇 bogey the next hole,鈥 he said. 鈥淲ay too many mistakes today. Obviously I’m pretty frustrated with the result.鈥

His struggles started on the par-4 second, where his approach shot landed deep in the rough to the left of the green. It took him two shots to get to the putting surface and he made double bogey.

On No. 4, his tee shot landed left of a fence in a penalty area to the left of the green. After taking a drop, Scheffler chunked the next chip. He made a 10-foot putt to save bogey.

He made two birdies after that, but three-putted from 30 feet on the par-3 eighth, the second putt a push from 3 feet that took a 270-degree spin around the cup and stayed out.

Scheffler’s 73 was better than only five players in the 78-man field. He鈥檒l enter Sunday trailing leaders Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele by eight.

One possible boost for the final 18 holes will be the return of his caddie, Ted Scott, who left town to attend his daughter’s high school reunion, leaving the bag duties to Scheffler’s friend, tour chaplain Brad Payne.

Scott is scheduled to return for the final round, which will start much earlier than Scheffler might have expected on a week where very little has gone to plan.

Young sank 8 of 18 shots, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range, and added 11 assists and six rebounds for two-time defending champion Las Vegas (2-0). Wilson hit 9 of 20 shots with a 3-pointer, grabbed 10 rebounds and added three steals. Kelsey Plum made three 3-pointers and scored 17 with five assists and three steals. Nurse scored half of LA’s 18 first-quarter points to lead the Sparks to a two-point lead. Nurse, who scored 23 points in LA’s 92-81 loss to the visiting Atlanta Dream in the season opener, sank all four of her shots with a 3-pointer.

Jackson hit 3-pointers on back-to-back trips down the court and Zia Cooke added a basket to give the Sparks a 32-25 lead with 4:37 left in the second quarter. Young, Clark, Kate Martin and Wilson all hit 3-pointers in a 15-0 run as the Aces took a 40-32 lead with 53 seconds left before halftime and never trailed again.

Las Vegas led by as many as 12 on three occasions in a 29-point third quarter, taking a 71-59 lead.

The Aces opened the season with an 89-80 victory over the Phoenix Mercury.

Las Vegas will host Phoenix for a second time on Tuesday in the third game of four straight at home to begin the season. Los Angeles returns home to play the Washington Mystics on Tuesday.
