In an endorsement that provided a sharp jolt to the Republican gubernatorial primary, former President Donald Trump voiced strong support for Del. Daniel L. Cox (R-Frederick) on Monday, calling him 鈥淢AGA all the way.鈥听
鈥淒an Cox is an America First Patriot,鈥 the former president said in a tweet posted by @TrumpWarRoom. 鈥淒an is MAGA all the way 鈥 unlike his opponent, Kelly Schultz (sic), who was handpicked by her 鈥榖oss,鈥 RINO Larry Hogan, who has been terrible for our Country and is against the America First Movement.鈥听
Schulz, Maryland鈥檚 commerce secretary, is considered the GOP establishment candidate, due to her long tenure in Hogan鈥檚 cabinet, though she has been slow to define herself and has skipped numerous candidate forums.听
Hogan, a Trump critic,听听after the endorsement: 鈥淧ersonally, I鈥檇 prefer endorsements from people who didn鈥檛 lose Maryland by 33 points.鈥
Cox, a firebrand state delegate who has clashed with Hogan repeatedly 鈥 particularly on听听and听听early in the pandemic 鈥 has always been regarded as the most Trump-aligned candidate in the field. An attorney in Frederick County, he spent time in Pennsylvania following the 2020 election, searching fruitlessly for problems in the Keystone State鈥檚 ballot-counting operation. In January, Cox helped arrange for multiple tour buses to take constituents to a pro-Trump rally that led to an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and听听for upholding the results of the 2020 election as the violence unfolded. Cox has said he left D.C. after the nonviolent rally and听听at the Capitol.
Cox has听听of last year鈥檚 elections in Maryland, even though no credible allegations of wrongdoing have surfaced.听
Analysts said Monday鈥檚 endorsement by Trump was no surprise, though they said it could still cause reverberations that impact the eventual outcome.
鈥淣obody outside of Maryland had any clue who Dan Cox was until an hour ago,鈥 political science professor Todd Eberly said on Monday evening. 鈥淣ow he鈥檚 got the potential to tap into a nationwide donor network.鈥听
With donations from Trump supporters, Eberly said, Cox could be 鈥渁 thorn in the side of the Schulz campaign all the way through.鈥听
In a statement, the Schulz campaign downplayed the former president鈥檚 endorsement.听
鈥淜elly Schulz鈥檚 life experience, credentials, and record of accomplishment make her uniquely qualified to lead this state,鈥 said communications director Mike Demkiw.听
鈥淒on鈥檛 be fooled 鈥 Kelly Schulz is the only Republican who can win this race and the only person running who has the strength and ability to prevent the Maryland legislature from passing any law and tax they wish,鈥 he added.
Dirk Haire, the chairman of the Maryland Republican Party, sought to draw a distinction between how Republican voters view their party鈥檚 leaders.
鈥淭he vast majority of Maryland Republicans support both President Trump and Gov. Hogan,鈥 he said in an interview. 鈥淢ost Maryland Republicans look more toward President Trump for national issues鈥 and toward Gov. Hogan for state and local issues.鈥
Trump鈥檚 endorsement contained many of the exaggerated claims and random capitalizations that have become his hallmark.
Cox is 鈥渁 tough lawyer,鈥 Trump observed. He also said the lawmaker 鈥渉as done outstanding work in the Maryland General Assembly,鈥 though Cox has passed only two bills in Annapolis and has not served in leadership.听
The former president said Cox 鈥渟tood up to Hogan when he was supporting and meeting with Joe Biden.鈥听
鈥淒an is for low taxes, school choice, and no more lockdowns,鈥 Trump tweeted. 鈥淗e supports our Military, our great Vets, our Second Amendment, which is under attack like never before, and importantly, is very strong on Election Integrity. He fought against the Rigged Presidential Election every step of the way, and will bring secure Elections back to Maryland.鈥听
Judges across the country rejected dozens of fraud and mismanagement claims raised by the Trump campaign and the GOP-controlled Congress certified Biden鈥檚 victory.
Former Lt. Governor Michael Steele, who frequently denounced Trump and endorsed Joe Biden in 2020,听听in July. He is expected to decide in the next week whether to enter the race.听
Jim Dornan, a Republican strategist who is advising Steele, also sought to downplay Trump鈥檚 endorsement of Cox, saying, 鈥淢arylanders pride themselves on their independence and will vote for the candidate that shares their values.鈥听
Robin Ficker, a Montgomery County tax activist known for his numerous unsuccessful referendum petitions, is also in the race.
