Local officials are pushing to change the town’s name to “Natsburg” for the weekend.

“The Washington Nationals baseball team has many strong and loyal Virginia fans,” to be presented at a special session of the Leesburg Town Council Friday afternoon.

Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk and Vice Mayor Fernando Martinez called for the meeting Thursday afternoon, according to the Loudoun Times-Mirror.

If approved, the town’s name will officially be “Natsburg” from Friday, Nov. 1 to Sunday, Nov. 3.

“Baseball is more than just a game but is a presence in our community, from Tee-ball to
Little League, to Babe Ruth League and high school teams to the National League champion Washington Nationals,” the proclamation continues.

“Baseball teaches team work, dedication to the goal, discipline and the ability to get along with and help others.”

The move is similar to one made by another Loudoun County town after the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018. After the historic victory, as “Capitalsville.”

A victory parade for the Washington Nationals is to be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in D.C.

9 Howard Co. schools test positive for Legionella bacteria /howard-county/2019/10/9-howard-co-schools-test-positive-for-legionella-bacteria/ /howard-county/2019/10/9-howard-co-schools-test-positive-for-legionella-bacteria/#respond Sat, 19 Oct 2019 07:16:55 +0000 /?p=20301870 Nine schools in Howard County tested positive for the bacteria Legionella last month, the school system announced Friday.

Exposure to Legionella can lead to Legionnaires’ disease, a “serious” type of pneumonia, and a milder form of the illness called Pontiac fever, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Howard County said they began testing the school system’s cooling towers not out of compliance to any state or federal regulation, but “out of an abundance of caution and based on industry best practices.”

Legionella is a type of bacterium that occurs naturally in bodies of fresh water, such as lakes and streams. When it grows and spreads in man-made building water systems 鈥 such as shower heads, cooling towers and fountains 鈥 it can become a health threat, according to the CDC.

As Legionella multiplies, it spreads to water droplets small enough to be inhaled by people. When people breathe the bacteria in, they can develop Legionnaires’ disease or Pontiac fever.

Howard County schools reminded parents that it is not uncommon to find Legionella in building water systems, but the elevated levels 鈥 over 100 colony forming units 鈥 detected in the school cooling towers “suggests additional treatment and maintenance is warranted.”

“There are at least 50 legionella species, only 20 of which cause human diseases,” the school system . “The presence of the organism cannot be directly equated to risk of infection.

The school system test all of the cooling towers at 23 schools. for Legionella are listed below:

  • Atholton High School
  • Long Reach High School
  • Hammond High School
  • Howard High School (ground cooling tower and roof cooling tower)
  • Marriotts Ridge High School
  • Mt. Hebron High School
  • River Hill High School
  • Laurel Woods Elementary School
  • West Friendship Elementary School

Howard County public schools said they will continue to test all cooling towers annually. They intend to do so in the fall, “when the water in the cooling towers can be idle for extended periods of time due to low cooling load conditions.”

The most popular Halloween candy, according to each state /halloween-news/2019/09/the-most-popular-halloween-candy-according-to-each-state/ /halloween-news/2019/09/the-most-popular-halloween-candy-according-to-each-state/#respond Fri, 27 Sep 2019 03:46:06 +0000 /?p=20217940 Snickers or Twizzlers? M&M’s or Swedish Fish?

As long as you’re not one of those nerds that enjoys Nerds.

With Halloween around the corner, it’s time to answer one of the season’s most important questions: What is the best trick-or-treat candy?

, the answer varies widely by state.

The most popular candy in D.C. is Reese’s Peanut Butter cups 鈥 which also took the top spot in 12 states. Marylanders reportedly preferred Milk Duds and Virginians are big fans of M&Ms.

Airheads, Nerds, SweeTarts and Gummy Worms were the least popular, rounding out the list with just one state each.

The survey also asked one of the more controversial questions of the season: Should Halloween remain a fixed holiday on Oct. 31, or be moved to the last Saturday of the month?

Two thousand people in residential neighborhoods across the country gave their answer, but it’s a near even split.

Forty-eight percent of respondents supported keeping Halloween exactly where it is, on Oct. 31. However, 52% supported moving the holiday to the last Saturday of the month.

On average, respondents said the ideal hour for treat-or-treating is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and that 15 is the age at which we become too old to participate in the fun. (This 20-something-year-old staff writer vehemently disagrees).

The average household will spend $25.64 on Halloween candy this year, but the average household with children will understandably spend a little more at $35.01.

Even those without children, however, don’t like to miss out on the festivities. Three out of four respondents without children choose to stay home to hand out candy on Halloween. Most (81%) prefer to hand the candy out themselves, while 12% chose to leave a bowl of candy on the porch.

Despite your preferences, be sure to give the people what they want this Halloween season. Residents of D.C. should load up on Reese’s cups before the shelves run dry.
