Wes Moore defended state intervention to protect residents from federal cuts, arguing that states are increasingly being forced to fill gaps left by Washington on essential programs.

In Moore told CBS 太子探花 senior White House and political correspondent Ed O’Keefe that the federal government reducing or threatening funding for safety鈥憂et programs place an unfair burden on states, which are required to balance their budgets and lack federal borrowing power.

Pushing back on the idea that states can absorb responsibilities such as Medicaid, Medicare, child care and food assistance without long鈥憈erm federal support, Moore said those programs were designed as joint efforts and shifting the cost to states risks destabilizing state finances and harming residents.

“So many of the decisions that this White House is making, they are making with a clear understanding that no state has a budget to say, ‘OK, well, we’ll just take on health care, or we’ll just take on food insecurity.’ We saw that happen last year when the President of the United States broke the law in order to cut SNAP. In fact, we sued them, and we won, and we beat him in court on this,” Moore said, citing Maryland鈥檚 response when the federal government moved to cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

Rather than allow residents to lose access to food assistance, Moore said Maryland moved $63 million from its fiscal responsibility fund to maintain SNAP benefits. The fund is largely supported by capital gains taxes and was used, he said, to prevent families from going hungry because of policy disputes in Washington.

“It is an unfair ask to ask us to take on what should be a joint responsibility, because the federal government has decided to stop doing its job,” Moore said.

Moore framed the move as both a financial necessity and a moral obligation. He said governors are often left making difficult decisions to protect residents when federal leadership pulls back from its role.

He warned that expecting states to permanently replace federal funding is unrealistic and risks unraveling programs millions rely on, adding that Maryland will continue stepping in when federal actions threaten access to food, health care and basic stability.

Title IX probe targets Fairfax County Public Schools /fairfax-county/2026/03/title-ix-probe-targets-fairfax-county-public-schools/ Tue, 31 Mar 2026 18:02:25 +0000 /?p=29099404 The U.S. Department of Education has opened a Title IX investigation into Fairfax County Public Schools to examine whether Virginia’s largest school system properly responded to reports of sexual assault involving an adult student at Fairfax High School.

The Education Department told WTOP it will review whether the school district discriminated on the basis of sex in its response to the sexual assault accusations, which came from a dozen female students.

鈥淔airfax County Public Schools (FCPS) received the complaint yesterday and is reviewing it. We are prepared to fully cooperate with the U.S. Department of Education鈥檚 inquiry,” the school system told WTOP in an email Tuesday.

Israel Flores Ortiz, an 18-year-old who attends Fairfax High School, has been charged with multiple counts of assault and battery after several female students told police he touched them inappropriately in school hallways. He was arrested March 7 and remains held without bond.

The school system is working with law enforcement as police investigate, according to the statement.

“To maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we cannot share additional details at this point,” FCPS said.

Last week, superintendent Michelle Reid said FCPS has hired an outside law firm to conduct an independent review of the case and determine whether school policies were followed, as WTOP’s Neal Augenstein previously reported.

The goal is clear: to establish a definitive understanding of what occurred, when it occurred, and confirm that all policies, procedures, and regulations were properly followed. The firm of McGuireWoods will conduct this thorough, objective, and independent review,” the school system wrote in an emailed statement.

The Education Department said its investigation into the school system is of compliance with federal law involving several Northern Virginia school systems, including policies around bathroom use based on students’ gender identity.

WTOP’s partners at 7太子探花 were first to report on the investigation into FCPS’ response to the reported sexual assaults.

The Department of Homeland Security has said Flores Ortiz entered the U.S. illegally in 2024 from El Salvador. He’s scheduled to appear in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for an adjudicatory hearing April 9.

In juvenile court, a judge hears evidence during an and determines whether the defendant is guilty.

Virginia bill targets vape shops that sell to underage buyers /virginia/2026/03/virginia-bill-targets-vape-shops-that-sell-to-underage-buyers/ Fri, 27 Mar 2026 09:55:36 +0000 /?p=29087087 Vape shops in Virginia that sell tobacco products to underage buyers could soon face real consequences after years in a legal gray area.

Del. Patrick Hope of Northern Virginia told WTOP he hears from parents often that their children know which vape shops will sell to them 鈥 even though the law prohibits the sale of tobacco or vape products to anyone under 21.

鈥淚鈥檝e heard from parents and I know we鈥檝e seen the proliferation of these vape shops. These liquid nicotine products have flooded our markets in recent years and there hasn鈥檛 been sufficient oversight or regulatory measures in place. And oftentimes these products are making their way in the hands of underage buyers,鈥 Hope said.

A passed by the General Assembly would set up an enforcement system targeting vape shops that repeatedly sell to people under 21. Hope said that if those shops continue to break the law, the state will shut them down.

Hope said a major problem has been a lack of information. “We just haven鈥檛 known who they are. Last year, we passed a law that required these vape shops to register with the Department of Tax, and only 52 actually sent in their registration.”

“We believe that there are close to 10,000 vape shops in the state and we want to make sure that we pull them under this regulatory scheme,” Hope added.

The bill directs the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority, which already enforces alcohol sales laws, to hire inspectors for vape and tobacco shops. Once the bill is signed, Hope said he expects a quick rollout.

鈥淭ypically, bills in the General Assembly go into effect July of the year that they鈥檙e passed. We鈥檒l have an educational program for a few months, but I would think that we would be operational probably by October. 鈥 I think they鈥檒l be doing underage programs probably within the end of this year,鈥 Hope said.

Hope said the legislation earned broad support in the Virginia General Assembly.

The bill now heads to Spanberger for her signature.

Thursday, Fairfax County police said a major drug investigation targeted multiple vape shops, including a dozen Tobacco King vape shops, that are accused of selling illegal items, ranging from drugs to synthetic urine, and laundering money.

WTOP meteorologist Mike Stinneford said the Storm Prediction Center places the D.C. region under a Moderate Risk, level 4 of 5, which is rare.

“It basically tells us that the models had a pretty good idea that we were going to see an outbreak of severe weather on Monday afternoon,” Stinneford said.

He said several rounds of storms are possible, beginning with 鈥渄iscrete supercells鈥 in the early afternoon, especially across the western suburbs. Those could form between noon and 2 p.m., ahead of a stronger squall line.

“I do believe this is going to affect the metro area right around the first part of the rush hour on Monday afternoon,” Stinneford said. “This squall line may produce damaging winds, large hail and even some tornadoes.”

Stinneford said the main squall line is expected to move into the metro area between 2 and 5 p.m., likely impacting the first part of the ride home.

“Especially the first part of the rush hour, we may see some really negative impacts, some high winds, some hail, the risk of tornadoes and also some very heavy rainfall may cause some flooding on area roadways,” he said.

The severe threat ends Monday night, but lingering showers may briefly mix with wet snow as temperatures fall into the 30s.

Stinneford said sunshine returns Tuesday, but conditions will be windy and cold into Wednesday.

A warmup into the mid 50s is expected by Thursday.

FORECAST

SUNDAY: Mix of clouds and sunshine. Becoming breezy. Highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Showers, chance of thunderstorms. Lows in the low to mid 50s.

MONDAY: Chance of morning showers. Afternoon thunderstorms likely. Storms may produce damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes. Highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

‘Butchering his family’: Officer kills man who fatally stabbed wife and daughter, as son-in-law fights to live, Fairfax Co. police say /fairfax-county/2026/02/butchering-his-family-officer-kills-suspect-who-fatally-stabbed-wife-and-daughter-as-son-in-law-fights-to-live-in-fairfax-co-police-say/ Mon, 23 Feb 2026 15:21:08 +0000 /?p=28957253 A man in his early 50s stabbed his adult daughter and wife to death and critically injured his son-in-law before police shot him to death in Fairfax County, Virginia, Monday morning.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said two officers responded to a garden-style apartment in the 3900 block of Persimmon Drive, near the intersection of Pickett Road and Route 236 in the Mantua neighborhood, and encountered “a bloodbath of a scene” as the man, armed with a curved 10-inch knife, was stabbing his son-in-law.

Davis said an officer shot and killed the man after repeatedly commanding him to drop the knife.

Davis said this is a case of a man “butchering his family.” He added that there had been no previous domestic calls to the residence.

The officers arrived to the scene following a pair of 911 calls, including one from the son-in-law who was outside clearing snow and rushed back to the apartment after hearing a disturbance, Davis said.

The son-in-law saw his wife had been already stabbed, and the man was stabbing his mother-in-law, according to Davis.

“Then the father-in-law turned the knife on his son-in-law,” Davis said.

Police said the man’s daughter died at the scene and his wife died a short time later at a hospital. His son-in-law was also transported to a hospital.

The son-in-law and the woman who was killed have a 1-year-old baby who was also inside the apartment, Davis said. That child wasn’t injured and is now in the care of social workers.

The officer who killed the man is on modified duty, as is routine. Davis said police body camera video and 911 audio will be released within 30 days.

Officials investigating gas leak in Centreville after home explosion leaves man injured /fairfax-county/2026/02/crews-battle-centreville-house-fire-after-loud-explosion/ Mon, 16 Feb 2026 22:20:51 +0000 /?p=28926248 Firefighters and utility crews say they’re looking into an active gas leak after a house exploded Sunday night, injuring at least two people and displacing dozens of families in Centreville, Virginia.

The has taken the lead in the investigation of the explosion, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue officials said Monday afternoon in an update. Pipeline safety is under the purview of NTSB.

Residents reported smelling gas and a house on fire in the 14300 block of Quail Pond Court, off Buggy Whip Drive, on Sunday night.

Crews arrived to find the house engulfed in flames around 9:45 p.m., and a neighboring house with heat damage, Assistant Chief of Operations for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Eric Craven said Monday afternoon during a news conference.

A man inside the house was able to escape without the help of firefighters and sustained injuries that were minor and not considered life-threatening, officials said. Craven said another neighbor also had injuries that were not life-threatening and has since been released.

The fire department said that everyone connected to the home had been accounted for.

Crews with Washington Gas walked through the Fairfax County neighborhood Monday, sticking long poles with sensors into the ground to check for gas, WTOP’s Neal Augenstein reported from the scene.

Based on those measurements, four houses were at risk of exploding and 51 houses were deemed unsafe to be inside as of Monday afternoon, according to Mitch Clark, a spokesperson for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

Craven said there are four gas lines in the vicinity and crews are “narrowing them down one by one.”

“There’s three going in one direction and one crossing them. So there’s three in the easement, and one that runs across owned by different entities,” Craven said.

Clark said three gas lines run behind the house that exploded 鈥 the main transmission line for the county, another for Centreville and a third for Chantilly. Washington Gas crews are using heavy machinery to dig to confirm which line is behind the leak.

“Every hour, Washington gas takes readings on the exterior of the homes, manhole covers, as well as many test holes they’ve dug in and around the exterior of the property,” Craven said.

Washington Gas and Williams Pipeline Corporation operate the gas lines in the neighborhood of the house explosion.

Craven said that the readings are “well below the lower explosive limit,” but crews will continue to monitor and take readings Monday night through Tuesday morning.

Smell of gas at the time of the explosion

Craven said the cause of the explosion is under investigation, but there were multiple reports of “an odor of gas in the area.” He said officials are conducting soil testing and at-grade readings to find any escaping natural gas.

A neighbor who spoke with reporters said he arrived shortly after the explosion.

鈥淭he second story of the house was still standing when we arrived, and we watched it come down,鈥 the neighbor said.

He also described seeing unusual colors in the fire: 鈥淵ou could see different colors in the flames 鈥 green, blue 鈥 things like that.鈥

Augenstein reported that fire crews remained on scene Monday morning putting out hot spots.

A spokesperson with Washington Gas told WTOP that evacuated residents were offered shelter at a warming center, but it closed overnight after no one arrived.

Officials are asking people to avoid the area. Neighborhood residents who need to get necessary items from affected homes can report to 5101 Sequoia Farms Drive in Centreville. There will be staff there who can escort residents back to their homes to retrieve items.
