BWI had four scheduled Saturday, headed to Boston, Houston, and Orlando. 277 flights were scheduled for the entire airline, leaving several passengers and crew members to rebook to find their way to their destinations.

The airport shared a alerting travelers who were scheduled to fly with Spirit not to come to the airport, stating that no staff can assist with refunds or rebooking.

“Travelers are encouraged to contact their booking providers or credit card companies regarding refunds, and to check with alternative airlines for rebooking options,” the post said.

The post from BWI also said their staff will “continue to work with other airlines regarding additional air service opportunities and assets previously utilized by Spirit.”

High fuel costs causing financial strain

ABC 太子探花 transportation reporter Clara McMichael said that the airline shuttering operations is likely due to financial strain and engine issues, dating back to the pandemic.

“They (Spirit Airlines) were also in trouble because of issues with Pratt and Whitney engines in some of their planes. A big amount of their planes, I think over 70, have been grounded for some time. Then last year, we had this failed merger with JetBlue. And the straw that really broke the camel’s back was these high fuel prices we’ve been seeing due to this war with Iran. Right now they just didn’t have enough cash on hand.

McMichael said that despite efforts of a possible bailout from the Trump administration, which would’ve allowed the government to possibly own part of the airline, Spirit was still left with no solution.

“Trump was pretty enthusiastic about it himself, but they had very stiff opposition to that, from spirits, bondholders, from politicians, and, of course, from the other airlines. So they just couldn’t make it happen in the end,” she said.

Capped and reduced ticket prices from other airlines

Other airlines like United are now jumping in to assist travelers with the dilemma.

Henry Byrd, managing director of United Airlines, said they are offering to those who need to rebook for the next two weeks.

“We are certainly here to help those Spirit customers and employees, and we’ve stepped in with special fares and more options to get them where they need to go,” he said.

McMichael also noted that JetBlue and other airlines are helping as long as travelers have their itinerary from Spirit and proof of payment. Spirit is also issuing refunds.

“You might even be able to get a $99 fare from JetBlue. So you know, keep your eye out for some of those deals in terms of getting money back,” McMichael said. “Spirit is saying they will issue automatic refunds if you booked with debit or credit. However, if you booked with a voucher or points, you may have to go through the bankruptcy claim, but the other airlines are really stepping up.”

How customers can quickly recover funds

The National Consumers League is urging customers affected by the shutdown to take immediate steps to secure refunds and protect their financial interests.

In a release, NCL Vice President of Public Policy, Telecommunications, and Fraud John Breyault said that customers should not assume a refund will appear automatically.

“When an airline shuts down this suddenly, it鈥檚 up to travelers to take proactive steps to have the best chance of getting their money back,” he said.

Here are some actions the NCL recommend customers take now:

• Review your credit or debit card accounts
• Contact the travel agent who bought tickets on your behalf
• Contact your credit card issuer
• Take advantage of capped and reduced ticker prices for rebooking flights
• Check your travel insurance policy
• File a claim in bankruptcy proceedings, if necessary
• Keep all documentation

Higher flight prices could come soon

Spirit shutting down could be an indicator of what to expect from other airlines, McMichael said.

The presence of Spirit in your market keeps 鈥� the flight price is low for everybody else. So once they disappear, it is very likely that we will see prices go up overall,” she said.

McMichael also noted that other budget airlines are “having a tough time” with high fuel prices, and have met with the Trump administration to ask for $2.5 billion in relief.

“They (budget airlines) say, you know, it’s not a bailout. This is similar to what they got during COVID. It’s a lifeline to keep this industry afloat, but even the bigger airlines are struggling with these costs right now, so it is just hitting the industry very hard.”

JetBlue steps in as Spirit shutters

JetBlue is to BWI amid the Spirit Airlines shutdown. Starting July 9, JetBlue will offer three daily flights between Fort Lauderdale. The airline is also adding service between BWI and San Juan, Puerto Rico on November 2.

The sheriff’s office identified the man as James Branton and said it’s “believed” that Katelin Akens, who went missing over a decade ago at the age of 19, is “one of the victims.”

WTOP partner 7太子探花 reported that Branton is Akens’ .

The arrest came about as part of a multijurisdictional partnership between the sheriff’s office, Virginia State Police and the Spotsylvania Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

Akens was last seen Dec. 5, 2015, when she was en route to Reagan National Airport, WTOP previously reported. Akens was planning to catch a flight to Arizona, where she lived at the time.

Her family said she never reached her destination.

Police said Akens’ luggage was later found in a drainage ditch on River Road in Spotsylvania, although some of her clothes, cash, and her phone were missing from the bags.

“The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office remains committed to bringing Katelin home to her family and we appreciate the state, local and federal agencies that assisted with the investigation,” Lt. Col. Delbert Myrick said in a statement.

The investigation into the case remains ongoing. Anyone with information related to the Akens’ disappearance is urged to contact investigators at 1-800-928-5822 or at 540-582-5822.

Police said crews are in the 2100 block of Wootton Parkway. WTOP Traffic reported part of the parkway is closed. Drivers have been asked to avoid the area.

Students were dismissed around 10:15 a.m. and MCPS encouraged students to walk or ride the bus home.

“Without reliable water service, we are unable to safely operate key functions of the school, including bathrooms, food service, and general health and hygiene needs,” Liliana Lopez, director of MCPS communications, said in an email to WTOP. “Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the well-being of our students and staff, we are implementing an early dismissal.”

All after-school activities and programs scheduled for Friday are also canceled, she said.

WTOP’s partner 7太子探花 said the victim was robbed and stomped near Dunbar High School in Northwest D.C. around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Investigators said a group of people approached the teenager, asked where he was from and then assaulted him.

More people reportedly joined in,听eventually听taking his Louis Vuitton听shoes.

When authorities arrived, the victim was lying on the ground with a deep head wound. He was treated at a nearby hospital.

President Donald Trump has made it clear he wants a regime change in Iran. A senior White House official said “new potential leadership” in Iran has suggested they are open to talks with the U.S.

The U.S.-Israeli airstrikes continued Sunday and have led to multiple attacks on several countries in the region, with bombs dropping and killing more than 200 people since the start of the strikes, according to Iranian leaders.

Iran fired retaliatory strikes at Israel and toward U.S. military installations around Gulf Arab states. In Dubai, three U.S. service members were killed, marking the first known American casualties from the conflict. Five service members were injured.

Tensions between the U.S., Israel and Iran have remained ongoing for decades, since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. Conflict has largely centered around Iran’s nuclear enrichment program as global leaders grow concerned with the possibility of Tehran securing nuclear-grade weapons.

Prince William County Police arrived at the scene near Sudley Road and Campus Drive around 2:53 p.m. to investigate the two-vehicle crash.

Susan Minor, a 74-year old woman who was driving a 2019 Toyota Camry, was traveling northbound on Sudley Road at a high speed when she tried to pass another vehicle, struck a concrete median and veered into oncoming traffic, police said.

Minor, according to police, then hit a 2017 Honda CRV “head on.” The CRV was being driven by a 63-year-old man.

Minor was taken to a nearby hospital but died from her injuries.

There were two other passengers in the CRV. Police identified them as two women, aged 19 and 23. The driver and passengers were also taken to local hospitals with serious injuries.

The Prince William County Police are actively investigating the crash and ask those who have information regarding the incident to call 703-792-6500 or submit a tip online at .

“There is a massive Ecological Disaster unfolding in the Potomac River as a result of the Gross Mismanagement of Local Democrat Leaders 鈥� This is the same Governor who cannot rebuild a Bridge,” Trump said in his .

Trump also said he is directing federal authorities to step in to coordinate the response and protect the region’s water supply.

Ammar Moussa, a spokesperson for Gov. Moore, pushed back, saying the president has been responsible for the Potomac Interceptor sewer line for decades. 鈥淭he President has his facts wrong 鈥� again,” Moussa said in a statement, adding that the Trump administration has failed to act for the last four weeks and has put people’s lives at risk.

Mousa said Maryland officials have been on site since the start of the leak to help coordinate the response and keep the public informed: “If the federal government is just now showing up to take action, we will work collaboratively 鈥� as we always do.鈥�

The spill began Jan. 19 when a major section of the Potomac Interceptor collapsed, sending hundreds of millions of gallons of raw sewage into the river.

Since the spill, the Maryland Department of the Environment has been testing bacteria levels. Moussa said concentrations of E.coli have started to fall, although monitoring has increased as temperatures rise and snowmelt affects the river.

Rachel Rosenberg Goldstein, an assistant professor of global, environmental and occupational health at the University of Maryland, told WTOP on Monday that it will take time to fully assess the health impacts of the spill.

“I would say that this is really unprecedented, the amount of raw sewage that’s entering the Potomac River. We’re seeing levels of E.coli that are thousands of times above recreational water quality standards,” she said.

Rosenberg Goldstein said in the past few weeks, the decline in E.coli concentrations is encouraging.

“We’re going to need to continue to monitor what’s happening in the river and the different types of bacteria that are present. As we see temperatures rise, as we see the snow starting to melt; there are lots of different dynamics that can impact bacteria,” she said.

The University of Maryland team is working with the Potomac Riverkeeper Network to collect samples and monitor changes.

“We believe it’s important that the water continues to be monitored so that we can keep those that interact with the river safe,” she said. “It’s extremely important that everyone continues to not interact with the river, as well as the land that’s near the river, because of these high levels of bacteria that we’re seeing.”

Emmetson Zeah, 19, was convicted on all charges but one, including two counts of first-degree murder and other firearm-related offenses, after a bench trial.

鈥淲hile no verdict can undo that loss, today鈥檚 decision delivers accountability and sends a clear message that this community will not tolerate this kind of violence,” Howard County State鈥檚 Attorney Rich Gibson said in a news release. “Our hearts remain with the victims鈥� families as they continue to grieve.”

The shooting led to deaths of 16-year-old Michael Robertson and 15-year-old Blake McCray.

On Feb. 22, 2025, officers responded to a report of shots fired at the parking lot and bus loop area near the Lidl in the 10300 block of Little Patuxent Parkway, police said.

Robertson was pronounced dead at the scene. McCray was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he eventually died from his injuries.

Howard County police said surveillance footage, witness accounts, GPS monitoring and the defendant鈥檚 statement placed Zeah at the scene at the time of the crime.

When his home was searched, police said they also found a firearm consistent with casings found at the scene, as well as other evidence linking him to the shooting.

Zeah is scheduled to be sentenced on May 22.

The National Weather Service said there’s a 30% chance of light snow on Wednesday, with the highest likelihood being between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

“We’re looking at another shot of cold air on the way for tonight, may bring a few snow showers or flurries, though I am not expecting a whole lot,” said 7太子探花 First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin.

If those flurries come through, the D.C. region could see anywhere from a coating to a half inch of snow, according to NWS.

Any potential snowfall could make driving on untreated roads dangerous as leftover snow and ice from the weekend’s major snowstorm linger on roadways.

We are monitoring a chance (20-30 percent) for light snow to move through the areas highlighted in green from northwest to southeast later this afternoon into this evening. If the snow occurs, a coating to around a half of an inch could be possible during the PM commute.

The snow and ice is here to stay for a quite a while. The D.C. area may see a nine-day stretch of subfreezing temperatures.

The bitter cold continues with highs only reaching the mid-20s Wednesday.

7太子探花 First Alert Meteorologist Eileen Whelan said snow and ice will be “slow to melt” over the next few days. Roads and sidewalks could refreeze quickly once the sun goes down, keeping travel tricky through the end of the week.

“I don’t see highs getting above 32 degrees until Monday of next week. Clouds will build heading into the evening hours and then clear overnight,” Whelan said. “Watch out again tonight for a refreeze.”

A cold weather advisory is in effect overnight; Whelan said wind chills could reach 8 below zero Thursday morning.

The District hasn’t seen a long streak of cold weather like this since December 1989, Whelan said.

Bundle up in layers, especially if you’re walking anywhere. Many pedestrian walkways and paths are still being cleared.

There could be more winter weather over the weekend.

“All eyes are on a coastal storm that’s expected to intensify rapidly off the North Carolina coastline,” Rudin said.

Based on recent forecast models, Rudin said the storm will stay far enough east to limit potential impacts in the D.C. region.

“However, if you do have plans that take you to Delmarva over the weekend, or the Outer Banks of North Carolina, could be a big winter weather maker,” Rudin said.

In a statement Tuesday, Norton said it is time to “lift up the next generation of leaders.”

“Although I鈥檝e decided not to seek reelection, I will never falter in my commitment to the residents I have long championed,” she said in a . “I will continue to serve as D.C.鈥檚 Warrior on the Hill until the end of my current term.”

Norton, 88, had filed a termination report with the Federal Election Commission, which is commonly done when a public officeholder is ending a reelection campaign.

“I’ve had the privilege of representing the District of Columbia in Congress since 1991. Time and again, D.C. residents entrusted me to fight for them at the federal level, and I have not yielded,鈥� Norton said in the release. 鈥淲ith fire in my soul and the facts on my side, I have raised hell about the injustice of denying 700,000 taxpaying Americans the same rights given to residents of the states for 33 years.”

During her time as a delegate, she focused on the revitalization of places such as the Wharf, Capitol Riverfront, NoMa, Walter Reed and St. Elizabeth’s West campus for the Department of Homeland Security, and most recently the transfer of the RFK Stadium site to the District.

Norton also established the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program, which helps thousands of D.C. students attend college each year.

鈥淎t a time when our city鈥檚 autonomy is more precarious than ever before, we need more leaders like her: leaders who understand that the times we are living in will set D.C.鈥檚 course for years ahead, and that the fight for equality under the law is far from over,” D.C. Council member Brooke Pinto said about Norton in a statement.

Before being elected to Congress, Norton also helped plan the March on Washington, argued and won cases at the Supreme Court as an attorney and was a tenured professor at Georgetown Law. She was also the first woman to lead the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Her current term ends Jan. 3, 2027.

The record-setting crowd of 17,228 attendees came as the arena hosted the Professional Women’s Hockey League Takeover Tour game. The anticipated game saw the New York Sirens defeat the Montreal Victoire 2-1.

Game attendance surpassed the previous record of 16,014 fans set during a PWHL game between the Seattle Torrent and Minnesota Frost at Seattle鈥檚 Climate Pledge Arena on Nov. 28, 2025, according to a release issued by Monumental Sports and Entertainment.

The game was broadcast locally on Monumental Sports Network and marked the first PWHL match-up played in the District.

This achievement also comes after the Washington Mystics hosted the Indiana Fever at Capital One in September 2024 for a game that drew a record 20,711 fans. The event itself set the Women’s National Basketball Association single-game attendance mark for a regular season game.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said Sunday that a “mini-Sphere” 鈥� a little brother to the famous Sphere in Las Vegas 鈥� is planned for National Harbor in Oxon Hill.

Sphere Entertainment Co. is working with Maryland, Prince George鈥檚 County and Peterson Companies. This venue would be the second in the U.S., after the Las Vegas venue which opened in 2023.

The proposed venue would be the first smaller-scale Sphere with capacity of 6,000 seats, and feature an Exosphere 鈥� the exterior LED display of Sphere that showcases both artistic and branded content, according to a release.

The venue would also include the world鈥檚 highest-resolution LED screen, as well as all of Sphere Entertainment’s other technologies such as immersive sound and 4D effects.

鈥淥ur focus has always been on creating a global network of Spheres across forward-looking cities,鈥� James L. Dolan, executive chairman and chief executive officer of Sphere Entertainment said.

鈥淪phere is a new experiential medium. With a commitment to bringing innovative opportunities to residents and visitors, Gov. Moore, County Executive Braveboy, the State of Maryland, and Prince George鈥檚 County recognize the potential for a Sphere at National Harbor to elevate and advance immersive experiences across the area.鈥�

This project would use a combination of public and private funding, totaling about $200 million. The release said Sphere would also support nearly 2,500 jobs during the construction phase, and 4,750 jobs once the venue opens, as well as generate millions in additional revenue for the county and state.

The economic impact of Sphere National Harbor is expected to be greater than $1 billion annually.

鈥淢aryland has a long history of providing world-class entertainment and we could not be more excited to work with Sphere Entertainment to bring this cutting-edge project to life,鈥� Gov. Wes Moore said in a release.

鈥淭his will be one of the largest economic development projects in Prince George鈥檚 County history 鈥� proving once again our state is the best place in the country to bring dreams to life. The proposed venue is still being negotiated on and awaiting approvals from Sphere, Prince George鈥檚 County and the state of Maryland.

On Jan. 1, 2026, the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) shut down an illegal cannabis operation at a home on B Street SE, according , marking the 100th closure.

鈥淭his is about keeping our community safe and healthy,鈥� Mayor Bowser said in the release.听鈥淲e have a legal medical cannabis market 鈥� that is the market where eligible people should be buying and selling medical cannabis. As we mark this 100th closure, I鈥檓 grateful for the steady work of our enforcement teams, and now the work continues.鈥�

Over the past 15 months, the District has seized more than 700 lbs. of marijuana and 6,300 lbs. of THC edibles. Law enforcement also captured more than 3,000 lbs. of THC lotions and made 56 arrests so far.

The Metropolitan Police Department add they have seized 12 guns in this operation so far, which is significant because these shops can be “drivers” of violence in the city.

In the recent closure on B Street SE, police arrested three people and seized a鈥�9mm rifle, a鈥�12-gauge shotgun, and鈥�114 rounds of ammunition.
