Baltimore police had threatened to end spy plane program

BALTIMORE 鈥 Baltimore police had threatened to end an aerial surveillance pilot program because of what they said were 鈥渟erious breaches of confidentiality鈥 by the company that operates the private spy planes.

The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday that police had aired their concerns in an email to the company that was obtained by the newspaper. The email was sent under Baltimore鈥檚 previous mayor, Bernard C. 鈥淛ack鈥 Young.

His administration had authorized the pilot surveillance program. The email reveals for the first time Baltimore officials鈥 frustration with the company over the sharing of 鈥渦nverified statistics” regarding the program’s efficacy.

The program has faced legal challenges from the American Civil Liberties Union and lacks the support Baltimore鈥檚 new Democratic mayor.
