WASHINGTON — A man in a church van opened fire at bus stop in Southeast Washington, leaving one woman dead and two others injured.
It happened in broad daylight on Sunday afternoon, in the area of Naylor Road and Alabama Avenue.
When police arrived around 1 p.m., they found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
She was rushed to MedStar Washington Hospital Center where she later died. A man near the woman was also shot, but he is in stable condition. A second man was cut by flying glass.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 believe that this was a random act of violence, but we are investigating that,鈥� said Lt. Anthony Haythe, a homicide investigator with D.C. police department.
After the shooting on F Street SE,聽 police found the Honda Odyssey van that investigators believe was used during the crime.
The van belongs to the Mount Ephraim Baptist Church in Largo, Md.聽 Haythe said the church鈥檚 pastor couldn鈥檛 account for the vehicle’s whereabouts over the weekend.
鈥淚t hadn鈥檛 officially been reported stolen, but they didn鈥檛 know where the vehicle was,鈥� Haythe said.
Witnesses tell police that two people were seen in the van, which had Maryland handicap tags 2-4-1-6-9-H-T.
鈥淲e鈥檙e interested in who was operating it, because we don鈥檛 know who had the vehicle,鈥� Haythe said.
Police are talking to individuals who may have had access to the keys for the van. They also are looking for any surveillance footage that may help them solve the crime.
Police haven鈥檛 released the identities of the woman who died or the two men who were injured.
