During the ZooLights holiday festival at the Smithsonian National Zoo, fireworks were mistaken as gunfire shots on Saturday evening.
Around 7 p.m., D.C. police say that a group of kids set off fireworks in a bathroom at the zoo. Police said the incident caused quite a scare among visitors.
ZooLights returned to the Smithsonian National Zoo Friday and features 500,000 LED lights that transform the zoo into a glimmering winter wonderland.
Both D.C. police and Smithsonian National Zoo Police are investigating the incident.
Shortly after the incident, actual gunshots were fired across the street, towards the entrance of the zoo. D.C. police said both incidents are unrelated.
