Heading into the new school year, WTOP sent questionnaires and requested interviews with school leaders across the D.C. region.
Here’s Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid on the challenges facing her school district as the academic year begins.
What are you most looking forward to during the upcoming 2026-27 academic year?
Reid: I鈥檓 looking forward to another year of resolute focus on our 2030 Strategic Plan. We are at the midpoint, and I am proud of the commitment of our staff, families, and community to bring equity, excellence, and opportunity for each and every student in Fairfax County Public Schools. Our students continue to amaze me every day, and I cannot wait to welcome them back on Aug. 24.
What is the biggest challenge your school district is facing during the upcoming 2026-27 academic year?
Reid: FCPS has one of the largest school bus fleets in the nation. This year, we are adding an additional layered safety measure where every FCPS student riding a bus will receive a student ID card. They will tap it on a tablet whenever they board and exit the bus. Through this system, our transportation team will always know which students are on which school buses, improving safety and efficiency.
What impact, if any, do you expect federal funding cuts to have on your school system for the upcoming 2026-27 school year?
Reid: The Fairfax County School Board unanimously adopted the FY 2027 Approved Budget in May. Despite challenges including federal funding concerns, chronic state underfunding, and economic uncertainty, we continue to prioritize strategic investment in key positions and programs, as well as competitive compensation, ensuring FCPS continues its commitment to sustaining excellence in public education.
What role will technology, including AI, play in learning for your teachers and students during the 2026-27 school year?
Reid: FCPS is taking care to ensure that each and every student is leading for tomorrow鈥檚 innovation, in alignment with our Strategic Plan. At the same time, it is critical that we stay human-centered as we explore how emerging technologies can amplify what we do best: build relationships, engage young minds, and deliver on the power and promise of public education.
