Virginia poll gives Clinton edge over Trump

WASHINGTON 鈥斅燚emocrat Hillary Clinton has a nine-point advantage over Republican Donald Trump in a new statewide poll released by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

The poll, conducted聽last week between Oct.聽12 to聽15, showed Clinton with 47 percent support among likely voters to Trump’s 38 percent support. Libertarian Gary Johnson had 3 percent support, Independent candidate Evan McMullin had 2 percent support. Nine percent remained undecided.

The poll of 500 likely voters was conducted by the Republican polling firm The Tarrance Group. The findings showed Clinton well-positioned in Virginia’s population centers of Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and Richmond. The only region of the state where Trump had an advantage over Clinton was in the Roanoke area.

Support among independents appeared to be evenly split, with slightly more than a third favoring Clinton, a third for Trump and 25 percent of independents still undecided.

On views regarding the state聽economy:聽53聽percent said聽it聽was going in the right direction; 38 percent said it was on the wrong track; 9 percent were unsure.

But when the question asked about the national economy, 55 percent said it was on the wrong track and 39 percent thought it was headed in the right direction.

Virginians want Redskin stadium

Another issue addressed by the poll was聽a new stadium for the Washington Redskins.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has been in talks with the team about possibly building a new stadium in Northern Virginia. Forty-six percent of likely voters in this poll said they would support the Redskins moving to a stadium in Virginia, 21 percent were opposed and 34 percent were unsure.

But when asked if they would support using tax incentives for a new Redskins stadium in Virginia, 68 percent said they were opposed, 23 percent would support it and 9 percent were unsure.
