WASHINGTON — The Fairfax County school system will thoroughly review its science curriculum and require its high school science teachers to update their safety protocols, Superintendent Karen K. Garza announced Monday.
Among other things, open flames are suspended in all science classrooms until further notice, Garza said.
Six people — five students and a teacher — were hurt this past Friday when a fire broke out during a classroom demonstration at W.T. Woodson High School.
Fire Chief Richard Bowers said the teacher performed the 鈥渞ainbow experiment,鈥� a demonstration involving different colored flames.
鈥淲e will do everything we possibly can to ensure that this never happens again,鈥� Garza said in a statement. 鈥淲e are encouraged by the news from families of the Woodson students injured in Friday鈥檚 accident that their children are in good spirits. Our continued thoughts and hopes are with them as they continue the road to recovery.鈥�
