Sunday is National Ice Cream Day

WASHINGTON — We’ll consider it good news that National Ice Cream Day is this Sunday, a day that’s supposed to feel like 100 degrees.

Technically, July is and Sunday, July 19 is National Ice Cream Day — and the food holiday arrives right on time. Temperatures in Washington, D.C. are expected to be around 100 degrees, and a heat advisory may be issued, .

To celebrate Ice Cream Day, several shops around the area are offering deals.

Ice Cream Jubilee, located at 301 Water St. in Southeast D.C., is celebrating with .  Moorenko’s Ice Cream in Silver Spring, Maryland, is offering at their cafe.

will offer a free waffle cone upgrade on double scoops.  will give away samples of its new flavor, a sherbet made from Sour Patch Kids candies. Even dogs can get in on the action: is giving away dog-friendly samples at its PetsHotels from noon to 4 p.m.

National Ice Cream Day has been around since 1984, when President Ronald Reagan made the official proclamation. According to the , about 10 percent of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream.
