Time is running out for thousands of drivers to avoid toll penalties in Md.

BALTIMORE 鈥斅燭housands of drivers who owe Maryland toll money only have a few days left to take advantage of an opportunity to pay it back and get the penalty waived.

Each time a car without an E-ZPass responder goes through a toll plaza without paying, a photo is taken of the vehicle鈥檚 license plate.

鈥淓ach time we take a picture of a license plate, we mail you a bill,鈥 Maryland Transportation Authority Executive Director Milt Chaffee told WTOP.

鈥淲hen you don鈥檛 pay that bill within 30 days, we attach a $50 penalty for each time you go through.鈥

And those penalties can add up, especially if you are a frequent user of tolled roads in the state.

Last month, MDTA began a waiver program that allowed drivers who owed toll money to pay it without being charged the penalty.

鈥淲hen we were facing having to start suspending [licenses] and referring people for nonrenewal on their license tags, we decided to give them an opportunity before we did that to pay their tolls without having to pay the penalty,鈥 Chaffee added.

When the waiver program started, 164,750 drivers owed tolls to the state.

To take advantage of this program, drivers have until 11:59 p.m. Monday to pay the toll.

The money can be paid at any E-ZPass administration office in the state, online at or by speaking to a live person on the phone at 1-866-320-9995.

鈥淭ake advantage of this,鈥 Chaffee said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a one-time, unique experience that they are going to be able to do this.鈥
