Firefighters contend with frozen fire hydrants in battling Md. blaze

WASHINGTON – A firefighter is hurt after battling a large house fire along with freezing temperatures in Derwood, Maryland near the Shady Grove Metro stop.

Crews were called to the two-story house on Yellowstone Way Friday night where they had to deal with several frozen fire hydrants, snow, ice and of record-breaking frigid temperatures.

Montgomery County fire investigators say the fire started in a planter outside with discarded smoking materials. The damage is estimated as $600,000.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer  says the firefighter’s injuries are not life-threatening and no one was home at the time of the fire.
