WASHINGTON — Bob Simon, a longtime and legendary foreign reporter and 鈥�60 Minutes鈥� correspondent, died on Wednesday night in a car crash in New York City, . He was 73.
The Associated Press reports that Simon was a passenger in a town car that was being driven in Manhattan.
He worked for CBS for five decades, covering the Vietnam War and most recently doing a 鈥�60 Minutes鈥� piece last weekend on the movie 鈥淪elma.鈥�
Simon joined CBS in 1967, the network says, and first was based in New York, covering unrest and riots in the city.
He was based in Saigon in 1971-72, and won an Overseas Press Club Award for his war reporting, including the Hanoi spring offensive in 1972. He was also in Saigon for the end of the conflict, taking one of the last helicopters out of the city, CBS says.
He also covered conflicts in Northern Ireland, Portugal, Cyprus, the Falkland Islands, the Persian Gulf, Yugoslavia and American military actions in Grenada, Somalia and Haiti.
