WASHINGTON – The Mount Vernon Police District have identified the man who was shot and killed by police outside a homeless shelter in Fort Belvoir.
28-year-old James Bryant, a resident at the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter, began to assault other residents at the shelter Oct. 30.
When two police officers arrived on the scene, Bryant assaulted an officer and wrestled his baton away from him, police say. Bryant then turned on the second officer with the baton.
Police say the officers attempted several ways to non-violently end the assault. The officer struck by the baton fired his service weapon and fatally shot Bryant.
The officer who was hit by the baton was an 11-year veteran at the Patrol Division at the Mount Vernon Police District. He was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Both officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, police say.
Three of at least of the four victims involved in the original fight at the shelter were taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
