Brewers add Jonathan Ornelas in trade with Athletics effort to bolster infield depth

LOS ANGELES (AP) 鈥� The Milwaukee Brewers acquired Jonathan Ornelas from the Athletics on Saturday in an effort to help their struggling infield.

Ornelas, 26, was in the lineup for the Brewers’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night, starting at second base and hitting ninth after Milwaukee acquired him for cash considerations.

Ornelas has played 38 career games for the Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves and Athletics, hitting .200 with two doubles and three RBIs. He made six appearances for the Athletics this season, posting a .167 average in 13 plate appearances.

Brewers infielder Brice Turang is dealing with a left knee injury, but manager Pat Murphy does not believe it will require a stint on the injured list. Milwaukee has lost four of five on a Southern California road trip.

Infielder Jihwan Bae was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

SEC joins Big Ten in banning pros from returning to college, including basketball players

The Southeastern Conference passed a rule Tuesday banning players who have been drafted by NFL, NBA or WNBA teams or listed on rosters in those leagues, joining the Big Ten in taking a strong stand against this month's unexpected surge of pro players trying to return to college. The SEC's rule differs from the one adopted by the Big Ten, which only included football in its decision released earlier in the day. Combined, it leaves little doubt about where the nation's two biggest conferences stand in the wake of court orders that were allowing players who had been on pro rosters, then released, to return back to college. The SEC rule puts LSU on notice. This week, Tigers coach Lane Kiffin added Dae鈥橯uan Wright and Zxavian Harris, a pair of undrafted players out of Mississippi who had tryouts in the NFL over the summer, but were released by their teams during training camp.
